Types of Hearing Aids

A. In the Canal (ITC)

With an ITC hearing aid, the majority of the device sits within the ear canal. This makes the hearing aid less visible in the ear. These devices also make daily activities such as using the telephone more comfortable. They often come with the latest features and technologies.

B. Completely in the Canal (CIC)

CIC’s are extremely small and are nearly invisible to the naked eye. They fit entirely within the ear canal. Some people may not be able to wear these devices due to the size or shape of their ear. For most, after an initial period of adjustment, CIC’s are comfortable and well-suited for an active lifestyle.

C: In the Ear (ITE)

ITE’s are placed in the ear, but not all the way in the ear canal. This common model is custom-molded to fit most ears and can come in a variety of shapes, including:

• Full Shell Hearing Aid: Custom made earpiece that fills most of the area of your outer ear.
• Half Shell Hearing Aid: Fills the lower portion of the bowl-shaped area of your outer ear.

D: Behind the Ear (BTE)

BTE’s use an ear mold placed within your ear and connect, via tubing, to a device which sits behind your ear. These options are known for their durability and power. Because of their size, they are more susceptible to moisture damage and wind noise, and may be uncomfortable for some users.

Variations include:

Open fit: These are relatively small behind-the-ear-style devices that offer more discretion, but may also be more complicated to insert.

Body-Worn: In this case, the device is not tucked behind the ear but rather attached by wire and worn elsewhere on the body. Often preferred by people who wear glasses.
